Seat-mounted side-impact air bags and roof-mounted side curtain air bags are standard, as is GM’s Stabilitrack stability control system. Safety features include the standard OnStar communications system, traction control, four-wheel vented discs with antilock, electronic brake force distribution and panic brake assist. In my case, I sort of slid out of it, an ungainly manoeuvre that likely blew my image as a suave man-about-town. Not helping are the huge sills along the side of the vehicle (about 400 mm from the side of the seat to the edge of the sill), which encroach upon interior space and make it difficult to get out without rubbing your legs on the exterior of the car. It’s the long (2,957 mm) wheelbase that provides all the legroom, but in contrast, the SRX is quite narrow. Legroom is excellent, especially for front and middle-row passengers. Your challenge in the SRX is not where to put things, but finding them later. Additional storage areas are numerous, and consist of compartments, bins, boxes, shelves, cupholders, hooks and pockets. Available as an alternative is a rear cargo management system comprising three compartments where the seat would otherwise be stored. That third seat, of course, takes just about all your cargo space when it’s up. With the middle seat folded, a vast cargo compartment (1,968 litres) extends from the front seats all the way to the rear door. When you have extra passengers, the bench seat silently appears from the floor with the push of a button. The optional third-row seating is power-operated, which is probably unnecessary, but impressive nonetheless. It’s tailored, modern, and tastefully understated. You couldn’t describe it as sumptuous, but that’s not the intent in the SRX. The interior is nicely appointed in leather, with pleasant textured surfaces for the fascia, centre console and door panels. Premium fuel is recommended, but not required. You get the feeling that the German autobahn would be an excellent place for the SRX to stretch its legs. Wind and road noise are virtually non-existent. Once up to speed, the SRX cruises along silently. Zero-to-100 km/h arrives in about 6.7 seconds, and brings you up to highway speed in very short order, indeed. Put your foot into all this motive power, and the V-8 (a V-6 model is available) SRX rockets off the line. I’ll stick with the term “maxiwagon” to describe the SRX, but given its prodigious power and handling, maybe I should refine that already, and call the SRX a Sport Maxiwagon. In fact, it’s probably more akin to the Chrysler Pacifica in general size and concept, but it’s completely unlike the Pacifica in execution. The SRX is considerably longer than vehicles with which it’s being compared in the automotive press, such as the Infiniti FX45 and Lexus RX 330.
